Someone on X (formerly Twitter) asked Danny Sullivan (Google’s Search Liaison) if a business should have a website for must and if so, should businesses also have a blog and the answer is a mixed opinion.
Danny Sullivan went on to say something like: A business must have at least a basic website but the blog is an optional thing.
Sounds like Google wants every business to have a website of its own and submit that as an official website in Google My Business profile too.
It will surely give authority and trust scores to that particular business on others who don’t have a live website and still using social media pages as their official online presence.
He replied on X saying:
I’ve seen — and personally been to — businesses that didn’t have a site — much less a blog — that ranked in Google. I’d still recommend a business have at least a basic site just because, well, it’s 2024 and websites are a pretty common expectation.

Yes, Google recommends businesses to have a website and it will be ranking them even if they don’t have a great blog.
However, he also shared in the same X post that:
Blogging? If you have something unique and interesting to say, and you think your existing customers would find it useful, that it makes sense and you have time for all the other things a business typically does — sure, perhaps it might be good to do.

What does this mean?
Well, it’s a clear message: If you don’t have anything worth a read about your business and can’t make it helpful or informative for the end readers, you shouldn’t start a blog around your business website.
However, if you can put in some interesting blogs and know what your customers want to consume online as a blog post, you should go for a business blog and attach it to your website.
In short: Every business should have a basic website and if it is needed, they should also have a blog on their official website.
