How Do People Find Your Blog?

After a decade of using different tactics to drive traffic to my blogs, I want to know that understanding how people discover your blog is essential for increasing your readership, and ensuring your content reaches the right audience is what matters.

However, multiple channels and strategies can help drive traffic to your blog.

Here’s a comprehensive guide on how people find your blog and the tactics you can work on to enhance their discovery and optimize your blog to reach the right audience:

1. Search Engines

The #1 and the most rewarding blog traffic comes from search engines such as Google and Bing and we call it “organic search traffic“.

What is Organic Search?

Search engines like Google, Bing, and ChatGPT are a significant source of traffic to blogs.

When users enter queries into search engines the search results list relevant websites or give answers with links to blog sources as credits.

Then if your blog post matches the user’s search intent, it can appear in these results, attracting clicks from interested readers who are relevant and best for your blog monetization strategies.

53.3% of all trackable website traffic comes from organic searches.

According to BrightEdge

How Do People Find Your Blog on Search Engines?

Here’s how:

  • Relevant Keywords: Users find your blog through specific keywords that are related to your content. For instance, if your blog is about gardening tips, users searching for “how to grow tomatoes” might find your blog if you have a relevant post and a good ranking on search engines.
  • Featured Snippets: These short answers at the top of Google’s search results often come from blog posts. If your content effectively answers common questions, it might be featured here.
  • AI Overview and Answers: Many search engines such as Bing, Google, and Perplexity are showing AI Answers and Overviews that show a summary of an answer with adding links to sources to make people understand the context and if required then read the entire article.

Now the question is, how to show your blog in these results? and that’s when it comes to:

SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

SEO is crucial in ensuring your blog is discoverable through different search engines. It helps improve your blog’s visibility, making it more likely to appear in relevant search results and AI answers such as in ChatGPT answers and search summaries.

Key Strategies:

  • Keyword Optimization: Use tools like Google Keyword Planner to identify and target relevant keywords.
  • Quality Content: Create in-depth, well-researched content. Longer posts, over 3,000 words, often receive 138% more visitors than shorter posts.
  • Regular Updates: Updating old content can improve traffic and rankings. Many bloggers report increased engagement after refreshing older posts.

Actually,

45% of bloggers who add fresh content to old posts see better results and traffic spikes.

2. Social Media Platforms

The #2 blog traffic source is social media from where your readers may get on your blog.

Here’s how it works:

First, you have to create content that’s worth a read, a view, or at least a quick visit.

Social media audiences are always in a hurry and that’s why they don’t like lengthy and irrelevant content in their first visit and you have barely 3 seconds to prove that your content is worthy of their time.

Typically, social media blog traffic loves a fast loading blog, they want to read one or two lines and then look for the exact answer, an image, or a video where they can find what they visited the page for.

There’s a high chance that they will never open your blog if you fail to impress them with your first blog post.

So always try to bring something unique and creative before sharing on social media platforms and here’s more for you:

Direct Shares

Social media platforms like Facebook, X, LinkedIn, Instagram, Threads, and Reddit are powerful tools for promoting your blog to generate free traffic.

Sharing your blog posts on these platforms and more like Pinterest and WhatsApp Groups can attract followers’ attention and drive traffic to your blog more easily than SEO and PPC.

According to HubSpot, approximately 80% of internet users interact with blogs and social media.

But,

How Do People Find Your Blog on Social Media?

Well, here’s how:

  • Social Shares: When you or your readers share your content (blog posts), it can reach a broad audience (based on your or your readers’ followers and engagement stats). People who see these shares may click through to your blog.
  • Hashtags and Trending Topics: Using relevant hashtags and engaging with trending topics can help new readers discover your blog more faster.

It means you should always share your new blog posts and ask your readers to share your blog posts (if they want to) and you should also use hashtags to reach more people.

Here are some Key Strategies:

  • Share Regularly: Promote your blog posts across multiple platforms not just Facebook and post regularly.
  • Engage with Followers: Respond to comments and messages to build a loyal audience on your social media profiles, reply to your followers as fast as you can, and try to ask questions.
  • Visual Content: Social media posts with images or videos get higher engagement. Bloggers using 7+ images per post are 2.3 times more likely to report strong results.

So, always be regular and go with visuals to tell a story then force the audience to read or check the full story on your blog.

3. Email Marketing

Many bloggers just ignore the fact that Email Marketing is still a great medium for generating targeted traffic on their blogs.

Yes, I am talking about Newsletters!

Email marketing (newsletters for bloggers) remains one of the most effective ways to reach your targeted audience. Infact, blogs that actively use email marketing see higher engagement rates and return visits.

According to Campaign Monitor, for every $1 spent on email marketing, the average return is $42.

How People Find You:

  • Subscription Forms: Place subscription forms on your blog to capture email addresses. Offering incentives like exclusive content can encourage sign-ups.
  • Regular Updates: Send out newsletters with links to your latest blog posts, ensuring your audience stays informed and engaged with your content.

Some of the Key Strategies:

  • Build a Mailing List: Encourage visitors to subscribe to your blog.
  • Regular Newsletters: Send regular newsletters featuring your latest posts, exclusive content, and updates.
  • Personalization: Tailor your emails to individual preferences and behaviors to increase engagement.

Just be creative and think before sending your emails or setting up a CTA (call-to-action) for capturing emails.

4. Guest Blogging and Backlinks

Just like the guests in real life, guest blogging is something that enables you to increase your author score and make your name a trusted ID in your select niches plus giving you the opportunity to link to your blog from the articles you are publishing on other websites.

Here’s how it works:

Guest Posts:

Writing guest posts for other blogs in your niche can expose your content to a new audience and increase your E-A-T (Expertise, Authority, and Trustworthiness). You can also reach a more targeted and wider audience by including links back to your blog in your author bio or within the content itself.

How People Find You:

  • Author Bio Links: Readers of your guest posts can click through to your blog to read more of your content.
  • Content Mentions: Linking to your blog within the body of the guest post can drive traffic from those interested in specific topics.

That was about guest blogging, here’s how backlinks let your readers find your blog:

Backlinks:

Backlinks from other reputable websites can significantly boost your blog’s visibility by passing link juice and as well as driving referral traffic.

These links act as endorsements, encouraging readers from those sites to visit your blog making them finally find your blog in their quest to find an answer.

How People Find You:

  • References and Citations: When other bloggers or websites reference your content, their readers might follow the link to your blog.
  • Resource Lists: Being included in resource lists or round-ups related to your niche can attract traffic from interested readers.

As you can see, guest blogging and backlink are two different things, but some people use guest posting as a link building scheme that’s against Google’s guidelines and is a grey-hat SEO technique.

5. Online Communities and Forums

The biggest example is Reddit and the smallest is any new community platform you can count on. These communities or groups on Facebook help you get highly targeted traffic that converts best.

Community Engagement:

Participating in online communities and groups related to your blog’s niche can drive free traffic by letting the right people find your blog in the right market. Engaging with these communities helps establish your presence and encourages members to visit your blog very often.

How People Find You:

  • Group Posts and Comments: By sharing valuable insights and linking to your blog within relevant group discussions, you can attract interested readers.
  • Influencer Engagement: Collaborating with influencers or being mentioned by them can significantly boost your blog’s visibility.

Here’s how you can get this done:

Key Strategies:

  • Be Active: Participate in discussions and provide valuable insights.
  • Share Your Blog: When relevant, share your blog posts as solutions to questions or in discussions.
  • Build Authority: Establish yourself as an authority in your niche through consistent and helpful participation.

6. Direct Traffic

Who doesn’t know about “Direct Visits”?

Direct traffic comes from people who type your blog’s URL directly into their browser or have your site bookmarked and this happens only when you ask a couple of your friends to do so or your blog is worthy of this.

How People Find You:

  • Brand Awareness: As your blog gains popularity, more people will remember your URL and visit directly.
  • Word of Mouth: Personal recommendations from friends, family, or colleagues can lead to direct visits.

A great tip for making this happen or forcing your readers to do it is to provide value in your content, give freebies, super quality content that is not easily available on other blogs.

7. Offline Promotion

Promoting your blog through offline methods, such as business cards, flyers, or speaking engagements, can also drive direct traffic and help your readers to find your blog.

How People Find You:

  • Events and Conferences: Mentioning your blog during presentations or networking events can encourage attendees to visit your site.
  • Printed Materials: Including your blog URL on business cards, brochures, or posters can drive traffic from those who encounter your information offline.

While this may look odd, it is still a helping thing.

That’s all.

Driving traffic to your blog requires a multifaceted approach from creating great content to advertising it on other platforms and doing much more than that.

You can continuously analyze your traffic sources and adapt your strategies accordingly to ensure sustained growth and engagement on your blog.

By understanding and utilizing these various channels (that I wrote about above) effectively, you can ensure your content reaches a broader audience and continues to grow.
